Juvenile Hurling
The Juvenile Hurling season started very early with U8’s and U10’s taking part in the St.Patricks, Wicklow, Indoor Hurling Tournament which was held at Colaiste Craobh Abhainn.
This competition started before Christmas and continued for 10 weeks, at the end of which our U10’s came out winners in the Plate Final. Prizes were presented in the hall in Kilcoole by Damien Fitzhenry, and it was very heartening to see 300+ kids packing the place to the rafters and all there because of hurling.
Our U12 team took part in the league/championship throughout the summer playing 7 matches and winning 2, this was a very young team with 10 of them being U10’s, and if we can keep these together we are looking at having a very strong U12 team next year.
At the end of the summer we participated in (and hosted) a number of blitz’s for our U8 and U10 teams. These were a great success and all the boy’s thoroughly enjoyed playing in them. ( I hope it wasn’t just for the Fanta and crisps which they got at the end)
We continued with our coaching nights on Fridays indoors and Thursdays in the field when the evenings got brighter. It’s fair to say that we had an absolutely fantastic response this year with more than 50 kids in the field some nights. This causes its own problems, and we are badly in need of more adult help. Great credit must go to all the coaches who look after juvenile hurling, John Toner, Philip Gleeson, Ros Keddy, Gerry Curry, Colm Hatton, Pat O’Callaghan and Ronan Keddy, also Siobhan Hatton who looks after registrations and sales of hurleys, helmets and replica jerseys. These replica jerseys have been a huge hit with the kids and it’s great to see so many of them turning up to training wearing the club colours.
John Toner has set up a structure in the boys school where each class gets coaching every week, this is done by John himself and Leon Brown who is funded jointly by the club and the county board.
We are currently in the middle of a 10 week indoor training programme, and numbers have gone up again, we have more than 70 kids turning up every week, and again we are badly in need of adult help.
On the 9th of December the St. Patricks indoor tournament will start again and we are entering U10 and U12 teams again, any help that anyone can give would be much appreciated.
Many thanks to everyone who helped during the year particularly the many parents who supported our efforts, even a small contribution of time helps lighten the load on the coaches.
