Junior Football training has resumed on Monday Nights. Ciaran Dutton is the Manager again this year
********************** 2006 ****************
2006 will have to go down as another year where the club's adult male football teams will have to console themselves with the old adage that "it is not the winning that matters, but the taking part ", and take part we certainly did. Ciaran Dutton and Peter O'Neill assembled Junior and Intermediate squads (respectively) this season that were completely independent of each other. Possibly too independent, as they didn't train together, but that is a matter of opinion. Both teams had similar league campaigns resulting in bottom half finishes, and similar championships, to the extent that they both exited at the hands of the eventual finalists/winners.
Amazingly, the intermediates lost to the eventual championship winners, at the knockout stages for the third year in succession. This depressing piece of trivia will hardly soften the blow in years to come. The Junior footballers departed the championship the day they missed two penalties against Newtown.... Oh what might have been!
As always, a few footballers were to the fore this year, and I felt that the emergence of Eoin McGovern, and David Kelly was great to see, while the continued development of Morgan `Gootch' Hynes, and Colm McGovern was also noteworthy. Both of the football team mentors were ably abetted by the tireless work of one selector each. Ciaran Dutton kept it in the family with Ciaran Martin, while Peter O'Neill turned to Shay Hatton (I can't help but notice the growing influence of Priestnewtown on Football in the club!).
